Getting Started with Mediation: A Guide to Conflict Resolution

The First Step: Choosing Peace

Deciding to avoid or stop a conflict is a significant first step toward mediation. It’s about recognizing the value of sitting down with the other party to work things out. You don’t need to know the intricacies of mediation—that’s where we come in.

The Resolution Group: Your Mediation Partner

When you call The Resolution Group, you’ll be connected with one of our skilled mediators. They will address any questions you have and will ask questions to get an understanding of the nature of your dispute, your goals for entering mediation, and the other party’s interest in attending mediation. At this time, fees and payment terms are discussed.

Intake and Pre-mediation Process

After your initial phone call, your mediator will arrange a separate confidential and comprehensive intake and pre-mediation session with you. A copy of the Agreement to Mediate will be sent to you for review.

Scheduling Your Mediation Session

Once both parties have completed their pre-mediation sessions, the mediator will schedule your first joint session at a time and date convenient for everyone involved. Typically, a mediation session lasts between 2 to 3 hours and is guided by an agenda developed collaboratively by the parties. This agenda forms the foundation for open dialogue, helping you understand what matters to each of you and facilitating agreements that work for all parties.

Reaching an Agreement

If agreements are made during the session and the dispute is resolved to everyone’s satisfaction, the mediator will draft a Mediation Summary of your decisions. For more complex disputes that require multiple sessions, the mediator will draft your Mediation Summary after the final session.

Moving Forward

Mediation is a process that fosters understanding and collaboration. By choosing mediation, you are taking a proactive step toward resolving conflicts amicably and effectively. At The Resolution Group, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
